Camp Dole · Živogošće · Makarska Riviera
Živogošće is a beautiful small sub-Biokovo village, known for its long pebble beaches and crystal-clear sea. Your holiday will be exciting as you find yourself in a picturesque and indescribably beautiful setting. In addition to its natural beauty, it is also adorned with historical wonders. The crown of historical landmarks is a stone plaque situated on the very beach below the monastery. On it, carved into living rock, is an epigram in Latin dedicated to the source of water that flows from the mountain and flows into the sea. The plaque and the spring below it, preserved in their original form, are an attraction that must be seen.
Discovering these historical and natural landmarks is not all that Živogošće has to offer — we suggest you try all other available activities: sailing, water sports, diving, boat rental, tennis, day boat trips and more. The village boasts almost ten kilometres of connected pebble beaches, adorned with olive groves and pine forest. For those who prefer nature, the camp in the Dole area is comfortably equipped with a restaurant, shops, market, tennis courts and pétanque, as well as everything you need for a great holiday. Natural shade and a private pebble beach are its main attractions. For nautical enthusiasts there are two small harbours for mooring.
Of the many possible excursions in the surrounding area, we recommend visiting the Biokovo Nature Park — special for its diverse vegetation and the endemic species 'Biokovo bellflower'. Rare animal species including the griffon vulture, chamois and mouflon inhabit the area. You can also find various forms of karst, caves and deep pits, with marked hiking trails for a true mountain experience and cycling paths. And be sure to try the local primorska pašticada in one of the taverns, or the sweet treats rafiole or Makarska torta.
As a settlement, Živogošće is first mentioned in the mid-15th century, though the area has been inhabited since Illyrian and Roman times. From that era, tombs and remains of villae rusticae can be found atop Suzine hill in Mala Duba and Blato. Above the Pokrivenica spring on the seashore, carved into living rock, is the 'Licinian Epigram', which celebrates the source of fresh water and dates from 474 BC. Among sacred buildings, there is a church with a bell tower and a Franciscan monastery from the 18th century, which houses an old library and archive.
Throughout the summer, numerous folk festivals are organised outdoors in Živogošće. Be sure to also visit other towns on the Makarska Riviera — Brela celebrates St. Stephen, Baška Voda St. Nicholas, and Makarska St. Clement. Nearby Podgora hosts Ribarska noć (Fishermen's Night), and Makarska as the centre of the Riviera offers 'Makarsko kulturno ljeto' (Makarska Cultural Summer) including Fishermen's Nights, Summer Carnival and Noć Kalelarge with performances of famous klapa groups and folk ensembles.
